Winding Down

Last week was Sarah's last week of nature school. She finished soccer too. Wednesday is her last swim class, and her last art class is next week. Andy's last football game is Saturday. In the past I would have been bothered by the fact that everything was ending, that we wouldn't have anything to do anymore. Not this time. No, this time I'm relieved.

For the past nine months we've been over scheduled. A different activity for at least one of the kids everyday, sometimes more. No time for play dates, no time to relax or run errands or go to the park or play in the yard. Going, going, going. In some ways it's good, because we're busy. But now that I have to get three kids out the door with snacks and drinks and the right clothes and shoes, it's just stressful. We're never on time for anything, which drives me absolutely batty, and I'm always yelling at them to hurry up because we're going to be late.

So now I'm just going to enjoy all our free time. I had both girls with me today and we didn't go anywhere until we had to pick up Andy from school. They girls played so wonderfully together, I got to do laundry, actually put it away on the same day I did it, make some phone calls, catch up on emails, clean the kitchen, all sorts of things I probably wouldn't have had time to do otherwise. I didn't have to wake Amanda up from her nap to go get one of the kids, of course Sarah woke her up before she was ready anyway, it was a stress-free day. That means no yelling from me and very little whining and crying from them. No talking back and no bad behavior.

I could get used to this. Of course, check back with me in July and we'll see if I'm still happy to spend so much time with the kids.
