Best Gift Ever!

My birthday was last week. It wasn't a big one, but it was the one before the big one. Ugh. I don't feel that old, but I'm getting old nonetheless.

Anyway, the morning of my birthday we woke up to the sound of Amanda screaming for us at around 6:30 a.m. Charlie plucked her out of her crib and brought her into bed with us, hoping she would go back to sleep. Unfortunately this time it didn't work. Andy came into the room around 6:45 a.m. and asked, "Do you want me to take her?" Um, yeah, you don't have to ask that one twice!

It turns out Andy took Amanda and Sarah downstairs and got breakfast for all three of them. Awesome. I think I'll keep him around for a little while longer, he's finally pulling his weight.

Winding Down

Last week was Sarah's last week of nature school. She finished soccer too. Wednesday is her last swim class, and her last art class is next week. Andy's last football game is Saturday. In the past I would have been bothered by the fact that everything was ending, that we wouldn't have anything to do anymore. Not this time. No, this time I'm relieved.

For the past nine months we've been over scheduled. A different activity for at least one of the kids everyday, sometimes more. No time for play dates, no time to relax or run errands or go to the park or play in the yard. Going, going, going. In some ways it's good, because we're busy. But now that I have to get three kids out the door with snacks and drinks and the right clothes and shoes, it's just stressful. We're never on time for anything, which drives me absolutely batty, and I'm always yelling at them to hurry up because we're going to be late.

So now I'm just going to enjoy all our free time. I had both girls with me today and we didn't go anywhere until we had to pick up Andy from school. They girls played so wonderfully together, I got to do laundry, actually put it away on the same day I did it, make some phone calls, catch up on emails, clean the kitchen, all sorts of things I probably wouldn't have had time to do otherwise. I didn't have to wake Amanda up from her nap to go get one of the kids, of course Sarah woke her up before she was ready anyway, it was a stress-free day. That means no yelling from me and very little whining and crying from them. No talking back and no bad behavior.

I could get used to this. Of course, check back with me in July and we'll see if I'm still happy to spend so much time with the kids.

Happy Mother's Day

Sarah's class had a little Mother's Day celebration on Thursday. It was very cute. Sarah is the one in the green sweatshirt next to the wall on the right.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers and mothering types out there, from Sarah's spanish class.

Tea for Three

This afternoon the girls and I went to a Mother's Day Tea. It wasn't really for mothers at all, it was totally for the girls, but it was still very cute and fun and we had a great time. We went with a couple of friends, so we had an entire table to ourselves. The girls got fairy wings and fairy dust and wands to bring home, and got to wear hats and feather boas while there. Oh, and makeup, Sarah is so excited that she got to wear makeup. There was tea for the mommies and lemonade for the girls, finger sandwiches, scones, cookies and little cakes, and my girls' favorite, grapes on a stick. They went on a fairy walk in the botanical gardens, got to spread fairy dust on the flowers and were read a fairy story. All in all a great day.

Copy Cat

Now that Amanda is starting to say more words, she's also starting to repeat more. All of us are constantly saying, "can you say blank?" as you saw from my last post. Sometimes she's spot on and other times not even close. But she's paying attention to everything we say and do and trying to copy as much as possible. Sometimes, though, it's not in a good way.

The other night we sat down to dinner and Charlie was serving. He scooped out a big spoonful of casserole and some fell on the table. Without even thinking he said, "Shoot". Luckily it was him and not me because I probably would have said something much worse, I'm especially bad about that lately. Immediately after saying it Amanda piped up with "Shoot".

We just looked at each other and laughed, knowing how it works. Kids are smart and they pick up on things quickly, especially things said with some emphasis, and tend to repeat them when you'd least like them to. It didn't take her long, however. Later on during dinner she was trying to scoop some up in her spoon and it fell on the table. Without missing a beat she said, "Shoot". Amazing.

As if she wasn't already, this one is going to keep us on our toes.

Kid Quote of the Day

"Why does it smell like butt?"

-Sarah, after she got too close to me after I undressed from yoga. Sweat, butt, it's all the same, right?

More and More Words

Slowly but surely, Amanda is saying more words. I could just tell you what they are, but it's much more fun to hear them.

The Teacher

I've said it many times before, Sarah and Amanda really love each other. Except for every once in awhile when they intentionally pick on each other, which I think is ingrained in children and they have no control over it, they thoroughly enjoy being together. Lately I've been telling Sarah that we need to teach things to Amanda, because otherwise how will she learn? Sarah does try to teach her things, such as today while we were driving to swimming and she was trying to teach Amanda how to use a kaleidoscope. I wasn't really paying attention to what they were doing since I was driving, until I heard Sarah talking.

"Baby (she rarely calls her Amanda), put it up to your eye. No, higher, higher, higher. Put it up to your EYE. Oh, never mind, just give it to me."

Yep, that's exactly how I would have done it.

Amanda wouldn't actually give a repeat performance for the camera, so here Sarah is showing me how Amanda was trying to "look" through the kaleidoscope.

Kid Quote of the Day

"Do you get to invite a lot of people when you get divorced?"

-Andy. He asked this while we were listening to Taylor Swift's song "Speak Now". I guess it made him think of weddings and he thought if you invited a lot of people to your wedding you must also invite a lot to your divorce.
